Frequently Asked Questions
What is Argireline and How it Works?
Argireline® is a powerful anti-wrinkle hexapeptide with a Botulinum Toxin-inspired activity. It has become one of the most sought after anti-aging agents on the market. Argireline is the trade name for Acetyl hexapeptide-3 (marketed by Lipotec, a research laboratory in Barcelona). This hexapeptide is found within a substrate of botulinum toxin, also known as Botox. Peptides are tiny fragments of proteins. Argireline is used to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles in the skin of the face. It works by preventing muscle contraction in the places on the face that cause wrinkles (like laugh lines or crow’s feet) by blocking proteins from connecting with cells in the body to trigger muscle contractions.
What makes Argireline different from Botox is how it’s used. Botox is injected while Argireline is applied topically, with solutions typically containing between five and 10 percent Argireline. Another main difference between treatments is Botox destroys these proteins, while Argireline nearly disables them temporarily, to relax the muscles almost to the point of paralysis.
A 2002 study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and conducted at the Center for Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Universitas Miguel Hernandez in Spain, showed a 30 percent wrinkle reduction in healthy women after 30 days of applying a 10 percent Argireline emulsion. A 2011 study conducted at Mahidol University in Thailand also showed 30 percent reduction in wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, in women between ages 35 and 45 who applied a 10 percent Argireline gel twice a day for 30 days.
What is Alpha Lipoic Acid and how does it work?
Alpha lipoic acid, considered as the ultimate antioxidant, is more potent than its better-known cousins, such as vitamins C and E. It works to reduce the effects of free radical damage in the body, which can damage skin tissues, organs and cause disease. Alpha lipoic acid is both fat- and water-soluble, and is readily found in red meat, yeast and organ meats such as liver. Preliminary studies suggest that alpha-lipoic acid may be used to treat certain degenerative diseases, and may also have some skin benefits when applied topically or when taken as a supplement. Some clinical studies show that high potency lipoic acid applied topically can reduce wrinkles, minimize fine lines and improve the texture of the skin overall to create a youthful appearance.
What is DMAE and how does it work?
DMAE is a short for dimethylaminoethanol, a naturally occurring substance that facilitates the synthesis of a neurotransmitter acetylcholine and may stimulate the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of cell membranes. It is found in some studies that DMAE reduced the accumulation of lipofuscin deposits inside cells. Lipofuscin is a cellular pigment consisting of aggregated chunks of molecular waste, which may contributes to the aging process. It has been demonstrated that DMAE causes some degree of skin tightening. Some people report a cumulative effect with continued use of DMAE.
